Puppet Launches its Latest State of DevOps Survey

Folks who are focused on container technology and virtual machines as they are implemented today might want to give a hat tip to some of the early technologies and platforms that arrived in the same arena. Among those, Puppet, which was built on the legacy of the venerable Cfengine system, was an early platform that helped automate lots of virtual machine implementations. We covered it in depth all the way back in 2008. Fast-forward to today, and Puppet is still making news, creating jobs and more.

Now, Puppet has announced it has launched the 2017 State of DevOps Survey in collaboration with DevOps Research & Assessment (DORA), the leader in DevOps research and evidence-based technology assessment. The State of DevOps Survey and Report has surveyed more than 25,000 IT professionals around the world, and those who participate in the current survey are even eligible for prizes.

Docker Delivers Content Trust to Lock Down Container Security

The folks behind Docker now refer to it not just as container technology, but as the open platform for distributed applications, and why shouldn't they? Docker has truly changed how applications are delivered--at the platform level. Now, the Docker team has announced the availability of Docker Content Trust, a new capability that uses digital signatures to ensure the integrity of Dockerized content.

Available as part of Docker platform release 1.8,the new feature lets Docker users operate exclusively on signed content when building or deploying Dockerized applications. It's based on Notary and the The Update Framework (TUF), which help keep software distribution and updates secure.

The Year of Docker

We here at OStatic have been watching the rise of Docker over the past year with a mix of wonder and excitement. The project officially launched in March of 2013, and over the past fifteen months Docker took off like a rocket. On June 9th, Docker officially released version 1.0, signifying that Docker is officially ready to run in a production environment. Docker launched an official repository for pre-packaged, Dockerized applications, and will be providing support and training to make moving to Docker easier for established organizations. I'm happy to see the project succeeding, and to celebrate, here is a look back at how we've tracked their progress.

Ever Higher Levels of Abstraction - Building the Future With Chef

If you have been in the industry for a decade or more, you probably have a pretty good idea of what being a Unix sysadmin is all about. Load the OS? Check. Configure local user accounts? Check. Install packages, compile some from scratch? Double check. Unix has not changed all that much, so it would be easy to assume that the job you were doing ten years ago would be the same job that you can do for the foreseeable future. But, that is the trap of dinosaurs my friend, the weather has already changed, and the days of dealing with bare metal are already moving fast behind us.
