When you have large collection of anything from books to steampunk LEGOS, it's important to keep an inventory so you know what you've got, what you still need, and who borrowed something. Tellico - This KDE app comes with handy templates for managing your book, wine, video game, coin, or stamp collection. Import data in several formats including CSV, RIF, PDF, and even directly from IMDb and Amazon. Tellico exports to HTML, XML, Bibtex, and more.



Mozilla's Thunderbird E-Mail App Out In New Beta Version

Beta 3 of version 3.0 of Mozilla's Thunderbird open source e-mail application is now available for download, for Windows, the Mac and Linux. You can get it here, although it's still classified as for testing purposes only. There are also release notes, and a list of known issues available. Version 3.0 is a major upgrade, and has been in the works for more than a year. Here are some of the enhancements.


5min How-To Video Site Abounds With Free, Open Source Lessons

Today, instructional video site 5min has announced that it has secured $7.5 million in Series B venture financing. Led by new investor, Globespan Capital Partners, the round also includes existing investor, Spark Capital. 5min has aggressively pursued syndication deals and partnerships with many media companies, and many people in the open source community may not realize the breadth of how-to videos on open source topics that you can find at the site. It's an excellent resource for open source tutorials that you can start and stop as you see fit.

It's loaded with screencasts that walk you through how to use popular programming languages and an assortment of open source applications like Vim and Blender.

ShowMeDo has plenty of in-depth videos on all kinds of involved programming techniques, but there are several quick one- or two-minute tutorials on handy techniques like how to install the AdblockPlus plugin for Firefox and how to change the password to a KeePass database. Kaltura Releases Free and Open Source Online Video Platform

Open source video platform, Kaltura, has decided to face the online video industry head-on with today's public launch of Kaltura Community Edition. The self-hosted software lets Web site developers and owners integrate customizable video right into a site without the vendor lock-in hassles of proprietary software.

Once installed, you can stream video right from your server or content delivery network (CDN). Kaltura offers a number of useful functions including editing, annotating, remixing, sharing, and video management. The software is licensed under the GNU Affero GPL v3 and is available as a free download, however additional services like advertising, monetization, support, and hosting can be purchased through the company.



MindTouch 2009 Released, Now Includes Video Collaboration

Enterprise collaboration software vendor MindTouch continues its march to take over corporate intranets with this week's release of MindTouch 2009. In addition to assorted improvements and upgrades, the new version also adds three useful features that offer an extra layer of functionality to MindTouch-powered sites.

The inclusion of collaborative video capabilities lets project team members publish video right to MindTouch sites where multiple users can collaborate on and edit them. The new content staging and application packaging features make it easy to collaborate on mashups and application development, then compress the files for distribution to other MindTouch deployments.



Open Source for America Has Lofty Goals, Heavy Hitters

The new Open Source for America initiative is starting to get some buzz, with Red Hat, Jaspersoft, Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth, The Linux Foundation's Jim Zemlin, and other companies and individuals announcing their participation. Andy Updegrove, who will serve on the project's Board of Advisors, has a good post up explaining project goals. It's aimed at encouraging the use of open source software at the U.S. Federal level, and already has a lot of support.


An Early Look at Firefox 3.7

Want to take a very early peek at themes for Mozilla's Firefox 3.7 browser? Initial Windows theme mockups for it are now available for viewing via Mozilla Wiki. The mockups come very early in the Firefox 3.7 development cycle and aren't final, but they provide glimpses of the kinds of interface implementations that Mozilla will probably pursue. Version 3.7 is slated to arrive next spring, and here are some of the things Mozilla is working on.
