Redhat Kernal Issue...

By Satyam Mehta - Jul. 01, 2008

I have 3 OS' installed on my box: Windows XP Pro, Windows 2003 Server and Redhat v9. Everything was running fine but suddenly while booting RedHat, it shows the message "Kernal panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"

Your help in resolving this would be much appreciated...

Very often the kernel panic message has to do with Linux being unable to locate the hard drive.

A couple of things to consider:

    1) If you've added any hardware recently, remove it, and try to boot into Linux. If Linux boots fine, you'll be able to isolate the problem with your hardware.

    2) Boot from a Linux rescue CD (something like Knoppix - and then run fsck on the hard drive. That may fix the problem.
