Best Forum App Out There

Simple, user-friendly interface, a helpful FAQ and a rich administrator control panel.

You can choose the databases server (MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC), functionality, skins, etc. etc.

Everything is customizable & configurable so you can create the forum you always dreamed of.

Popular But Overrated

The only thing it has going for it is momentum and a large user base. Other than that - its an ugly, non-intuitive application that jams a bunch of not-so-useful functionality into a discussion board.

Now, it is opensource - so you can customize the crap out of it but then you're just better off going with another app.

But actually deploying those applications can be a huge, daunting nuisance. The WordPress installation instructions, for example, may brag of taking only five minutes - but that presumes you are already running MySQL and PHP and a web server and are comfortable configuring them.

Security of phpBB

What are the thoughts around security of the current version of phpBB? I want to setup a forum and was considering using phpBB. I think the current version out is 2.0.22.
