Google is out with an update to its Chrome for Android browser, aimed at Android phones as well as tablets, and it includes a major set of new features. The new release is officially still a beta, but many Android users will want to get it. Here is more on what's under the hood.

The Google Chrome Blog makes clear that the new beta release of Chrome for Android has the potential to reach a lot more internationaly users. It's available in 31 more countries than it was before, and is apparently available in all countries where Google Play is offered. The newly delivered Google Play is positioned as a one-stop shop for all things Android, and a hub for entertainment.

The Chrome post adds that the new browser beta has a number of added features:

  • You can now request the desktop version of a website, in case you would rather not view the mobile version.
  • You can now add bookmarks as shortcuts on your home screen, so you can get to your favorite sites faster.
  • Choose your favorite apps to handle links opened in Chrome.
  • Have a proxy setup for Wi-Fi access? You can now use Chrome with the system proxy configured in Android settings.

You can, of course,  install Chrome for Android directly from Google Play. In addition to the new features, there are many security and peformance updates found within. The browser is intended for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) phones and tablets.
